Texas Motorplex Home of the world speed record of 333.95 MPH! The Texas Motorplex hosts the annual NHRA Fall National auto racing event, and more than 90 other racing events. The Texas Motorplex is considered one of the finest 1/4 mile drag racing facilities in the nation. Constructed in 1986 by Billy Meyer, the Texas Motorplex is known across the country as "the ultimate drag racing facility" both by drivers and the fans alike. The City of Ennis was established as a town in 1872 and was named after Cornelius Ennis, Director of the Houston & Texas Central (H&TC) Railroad. The museum is located inside the restored Van Noy Restaurant (circa 1915) and is located just off Ennis Avenue at 105 NE Main Street, behind the Ennis Convention & Visitors Bureau. The sparkling body of water offers skiing, fishing, swimming, boating and more to be done at your leisure. Camp, picnic, or host a special gathering on the 1,800 acres surrounding the lake. Highview Marina rents paddle boats and offers fishing space in a covered pavilion. In addition, the Army Corp of Engineers has developed a "Buffalo Creek Wetland" brochure, which describes this wetland project. Tonkawa Trail, at the Buffalo Creek Wetland, provides access to the entire wetland complex. Photo opportunities abound as there are as many plants and animals along the trail. Lake Bardwell is located one mile to the South of the City on Texas Highway 34. Pick up a map at the Ennis Convention & Visitors Bureau downtown at 002 East Ennis Avenue (located on the corner of E. Ennis Avenue and Northeast Main Street) so that you can explore the Ennis Historic Driving Tour. For a quaint visit to "yesteryear" stroll the downtown streets for a return to the "Golden Days of Ennis" complete with brick streets. As you leisurely stroll along brick streets under the warm glow of our turn of the century street lights, you will admire the picturesque beauty of the Ennis National Register Historic District featuring fully restored historic commercial businesses and residential properties alike. Pick up a map of various trails, and later stop by the Ennis Railroad & Cultural Heritage Museum to watch a brief video history of Ennis. While you are there enjoy the railroad memorabilia, the dioramas, the depot replicas, china exhibit from the old rail lines, Czech dolls from the old country & more.
A little bit of Czechoslovakia lives in Ennis! As you go through through the downtown historic district, you can peruse the latest finds from the Czech Republic, including furniture, crystal, garnets, ceramics, books, and other Czech gifts at the Czech Heritage Shoppe and Antiques located on Ennis Avenue.
Make plans now to experience authentic cuisine, sounds, and costumes of the Czech and Slovak heritage at the City's largest festival - - the long-running National Polka Festival taking place Memorial Day Weekend in May. Join the fun starting at the gala parade at 10:00 a.m. The festival features 13 live bands, and arts and crafts; shuttle buses carry enthusiastic visitors both to-and-from the various entertainment sites for polka music, lunch and dinners. See a "little bit of Czechoslovakia" at North Texas only Czech Museum, a memorial to the local Czech Heritage, and those Czech individuals who helped develop the Ennis community. Exhibits include authentic Czech costumes, memorabilia, dolls, photographs, crystal, books and much more. Reservations are required prior to visiting museum located on Texas Highway 34-East.
